Using Our Cued Music in Class or at a Dance We distribute our videos via YouTube because YouTube handles all the copyright issues for us. We know of no other way of distributing cued music that is 100% copyright safe. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use our cued music in class or at a dance! Just play the video on your computer as you would any music app or DanceMaster/DanceWizard, and it should work. But… Don’t you need internet access to access YouTube? Well, yes and no. For $13.99/mo (less for an annual subscription), YouTube Premium will let you pre-download our videos for use offline. As a bonus, you won’t have to watch ads on any YouTube videos you watch, anymore, ever. Kind of nice. But it may be unnecessary to go that far. A lot of dance halls have added wifi. Or, you may be able to use your cell connection on your phone (“hotspotting”). Too technical or expensive? Well there is another solution: Remember that the problem is only distribution. If you have your music performance license (RAL) and own the music, you’re legally entitled to use our cued music (all of our regular demo cuers have agreed to this – you might want to be more careful with showcases). We just don’t have a legal way to get it to you. Except… You could record the audio from our video using Audacity. It’s the exact same setup we described for turning separate voice and music files into a single split-channel mp3 file here. As in that scenario, you’re just playing something on your computer and recording the audio. It takes very little technical know-how to set it up, especially if you’re already familiar with Audacity, but it will require some prep time on your end since you’ll have to do this for every DanceDemos dance you want to use. We wish we had a better solution, but, as Internet access becomes more ubiquitous, the problem will naturally just fade away. People will just play the video on their computer. Page Views: 16
